For the past 2 years something special has been happening at a school campus in Singapore. Grade 3-6 boys are arguing about whose turn it is to read a hotly desired book. They’re spontaneously standing up and recommending their favourite book. They’re rushing to get to the library to take part in a book club, and the club is so full it’s not taking any more members. They’re reading more and doing better on reading assessments than their peers. How did this happen? How can you recreate the magic in your school?
This talk is partly practical, how to set up a “blokes with books” club, what are the elements to make it success, and partly research based evidence on how to identify students with problems with either attitude, motivation or reading skills and what to do next.
